The story of the Kearsarge and Alabama A K Browne 9781177662826 Books

This account of one of the few Civil War naval battles is brief and to the point, and very much in the style of late 19th century militay historians. It suffers from too much brevity - in our time we would seek responses from the men involved on both sides, but this just tells who shot, who sank, and who got away. It is good resource material - see Shelby Foote, who quotes it extensively in his history of the Civil War - but not absolutely must-have reading.

Good overview of a brief event in the Civil War. It does show how technology can influence an event when other factors appear otherwise balanced.
Just as advertised
The tale was told true.
Good book. I served aboard the more recent USS Kearsarge CVA 33 between 1958 and 1959 and being a native of Alabama took a little ribbing from those who knew the history of the Alabama and Kearsarge.
The Alabama was a tough ship designed to wreck the shipping of materials to the Northern United States during the war between the states. And she was quite good at it. It is amazing that the Kearsarge beat her so handily. Great eyewitness report of the battle
Very interesting and informative. Dry, detailed reporting, but some opinion, and humor, comes through. The part about the chains having been a long term feature, and covered was new to me. I'd like to know if the photo from the church tower survived. Answers and questions. Well worth the price and the short read.
